Headlines about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are almost impossible to avoid in the midst of their high-profile divorce case. In December 2020, divorce rumors started swirling, and Kim officially filed for divorce on February 19, 2021. According to multiple news outlets, Kanye did not take the split well but responded to her filing, citing “irreconcilable differences,” and seeking joint legal and physical custody of their children.

$2.1 Billion on the Line

In terms of property division, Kim and Kanye had a prenup, so splitting their $2.1 billion marital estate was simple, according to Forbes. Kim reportedly kept the family home, while Kanye kept their Malibu beach house and ranches in Wyoming.

The drama seemed to cool down after Kim discussed the reasons for her divorce on her reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Kanye unfollowed the family on Instagram. Kim and Kanye even took their 4 children to an art museum together, and Kim came to support her ex at several of his Donda listening events.

Public Outbursts

In November, however, Kim was linked to Saturday Night Live comedian, Pete Davidson, and Kanye gave an interview expressing his desire to stay together. According to Kanye: “I ain’t never even seen the papers… We’re not even divorced.” In November 2021, Kanye gave an impromptu speech about his failing marriage at Los Angeles Mission’s Annual Thanksgiving event. He also publicly asked Kim to come back to him during a benefit concert in Los Angeles.

Sources close to Kim told the media that she was embarrassed by Kanye’s outbursts. Kim emphasized her singlehood on Instagram. During all of this, Kanye was romantically linked to model Vinetria.

Trying to Move the Case Forward

Frustrated, Kim filed documents requesting to be “legally single” and move forward with the divorce in December 2021. She claimed that Kanye and his team had “been nonresponsive” to her efforts to move the case forward. In the documents, Kim wrote:

irreconcilable differences have existed and continue to exist between [West] and me, which have caused our marriage to irretrievably break down. No counseling or reconciliation effort will be of any value at this time.…[West] and I both deserve the opportunity to build new lives. Therefore, I am asking that my request to bifurcate and terminate our marital status be granted.”

In response to Kim’s actions, Kanye reportedly broke up with Vinetria and bought the house across the street from his former family home in Hidden Hills. He also denied Kim’s petition to be legally single due to concerns about their custody and property agreements.

‘Divorce Is Difficult Enough’

In January, while he was romantically linked to actor Julia Fox, Kanye showed up at his daughter, Chicago West’s, birthday party, which he claimed he wasn’t invited to. The Kardashians denied this allegation and said they were glad Kanye showed up – even if they wished he would have RSVPed.

Sources once again emphasized Kim’s wishes to move on with her life and have a structured schedule to raise their kids together. In February 2022, Kim issued a rare public statement about the divorce and Kanye’s “constant attacks” on her. She wrote:

Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all. From the beginning, I have wanted nothing but a healthy and supportive co-parenting relationship because it is what is best for our children and it saddens me that Kanye continues to make it impossible every step of the way.”

Kanye did not respond positively to Kim’s Instagram post and accused Kim’s attorney of “manipulating [her] to be this way.”

Safety Concerns

Later in the month, Kanye deleted all his negative social media posts about Kim and posted several photos of his wife and kids with the caption, “GOD PLEASE BRING OUR FAMILY BACK TOGETHER.” On Valentine’s Day, Kanye once again expressed his hopes that Kimye would get back together, saying Kim wore a coat he bought her on her Valentine’s Day date with Pete Davidson.

Kim privately texted Kanye to ask him to stop talking about Pete because she was afraid for his safety. Kanye shared the text messages, deleted the post, shared a picture of Kim, then deleted that post, too.

It has been over a year since Kim filed for divorce to end the couple’s 6-year marriage.
