Recovery from divorce is a challenging journey, but there are benefits that shouldn't be overlooked. Don't let anger and resentment keep you from moving on with your life. Of course, realize that feeling and processing these "heavier" emotions is also part of a process, as well.

Like the old adage goes - there are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned. Through these lessons you have learned, and in many ways there are benefits to be realized. At this moment, it may not feel like there is any good to come of your situation, but realize that it and takes most people at least two years to start understanding and acknowledging the valuable lessons they have been taught. Once the wounds start to heal, you will no doubt agree that here are some wonderful life lessons to learned after going through hard times.

You are stronger than you think! Divorce can be one of those crushing life moments when you think to yourself- how am I going to get through this? Everything you knew to be normal has been turned upside down. The depressed days can seem to linger for an eternity, and you wonder when happy will be a norm in your life again. You will get through this and you will find an amazing new you. During the process, you are able to create a new sense of who you are and start to recognize talents and strengths that you didn't even know you had.

This leads to the second benefit, an increase in self-esteem. Though your self esteem may seem to be dragging on the floor right now you have the power to change this with time. Now that you are more independent and in more in control of your life you will start to see that you are capable of more than you thought. Having to rely on yourself makes you creative while building your self-confidence.

Freedom to do what you want - and how you want it done. I am not just talking about having the power of the remote control; I'm talking about taking your life in a different direction. Take that vacation that you always wanted (you're worth it), sign-up for that evening class and see what direction that takes your career in and/or go visit your good friend and let her/him know how much they mean to you. I know you can add a few other things to the list that you have wanted to do for a long time.

Appreciating and knowing your friends better. You know which friends listened and supported you through your divorce; you also know which ones disappeared into the woodwork. Now that you know who will stand by your side in a crisis, let them know you appreciate them. Take them out to dinner, bake some cookies or just spend time solidifying and recognizing their friendship.

Wisdom is the teacher which appeared throughout the journey. You will have been through a major life transition and have a lot of life lessons to take away from your divorce. Don't squander the opportunity to flourish. Sure, there is a lot of pain and anger to release, but there is also a new you to be discovered in the healing process.
